What you need to know about the 2023 Nissan ARIYA

An electric motor and a large battery pack power the Nissan ARIYA electric crossover. Unlike hybrids, which use a traditional compact engine, there’s just a battery. Based on the maker specifications, an electric battery pack can go anywhere in a vehicle. Depending on the priorities for the vehicle, placing the battery pack in different areas can add more benefits, including:

  • Added stability
  • Improved driving dynamics
  • Service accessibility
  • Extra cargo capacity

The general benefits of EVs include a lower carbon footprint, no engine warmup, and no more oil changes. Plus, you get instant power instead of the acceleration needed in traditional engines. Saving on gas is just another general benefit of EVs, too.

Elevated design

Since creating the Nissan LEAF 10 years ago, the company has drastically innovated its approach to electric vehicles. A decade’s worth of development is evident in ARIYA’s balance of style and tech. The intention behind this elevated design lies in a perfect marriage of form and function. The goal is to communicate sleek simplicity to the consumer, allowing the sophisticated advancements to speak for themselves.

Nissan placed a shield on the front grill to protect various driver support features and maintain a polished aesthetic. The redesigned brand logos shine brightly with the 20 LEDs that compose it. The redesign is all about respecting tradition and reflects a movement toward modern mobility and energy sources.

The rear of ARIYA has a steeply raked C-pillar that blends into the rear deck. When parked, the one-piece light blade gives a blackout effect and consistent red light, day or night, when in use. Rear fenders and a high-mounted rear wing signal ARIYA’s powerful EV capabilities.

Nissan’s all-new EV platform gives the ARIYA a roomy cabin. Compact powertrain components allow a climate control system under the hood. The flat, open floor and Zero Gravity seats create lots of legroom and easy interaction between front- and rear-seat passengers. The inclusion of sound-absorbing materials makes a quiet cabin a stress-free, lounge-like space.

A buttonless digitized dashboard and central console create even more space. The slide-out table design turns the cabin space into a mobile office or picnic table, giving you tons of versatility.

Connectivity

Wonderful design features aside, the intelligent features and technological advancements are another big selling point for this electric crossover. A new interface and wireless firmware updates keep this vehicle updated always.

The personal assistance technology features a voice recognition system with natural language understanding for in-vehicle assistance. Plus, you get Amazon’s Alexa and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for all-around seamless integration.

The connectivity interface is horizontal, 12.3 by 12.3 inches. With multiple pieces of information displayed, it’s easy to see everything you need. Both displays are in a wave-like shape, so information about your battery, range, and navigation is easy to access with a single swipe. You can customize what appears on your dash. And the Nissan ARIYA has one of the largest full-color displays in the segment.

The ARIYA is also the first Nissan with firmware updates over the air — Remote Software Upgrade. You’ll get updates for software for the multimedia system, electric and electronic architecture, chassis, climate system, and EV settings.

Convenience

The all-new ARIYA EV crossover offers an estimated range of up to approximately 300 miles. Its new EV platform is optimized to deliver exceptional handling, too. The battery pack sits beneath the vehicle’s center for a low center of gravity and near-equal weight distribution across the front and rear.

The battery pack’s flat design and integrated cross members in the battery case give the ARIYA a flat floor and structural integrity. Suspension components stabilize handling and create a comfortable ride with fewer vibrations and noise. The rear suspension offers balance, ride comfort, excellent handling, and top-notch performance when combined with the multilink system and rear electric motor.

Driver assistance

The Nissan ARIYA also features top-of-the-line driver assistance. E-Pedal, first in Nissan’s LEAF, allows the driver to launch, accelerate, and decelerate with the accelerator pedal. On models equipped with e-4ORCE, regenerative torque is distributed to the front and rear wheels.

ProPILOT 2.0 is the newest version of Nissan’s driver assistance technology. The driver-assist tech supports:

  • Keeping drivers in their lane
  • Navigating stop-and-go highway traffic
  • Vehicle speed and distance to the vehicle ahead
  • Multilane highway driving tasks
  • Lane changes
  • Passing other vehicles
  • Highway exiting
  • Reducing driver workload and stress

This EV crossover’s driver-assist technology works with the navigation and  3D map data to detect the roadway type, direction, and speed limits and adjusts vehicle speed accordingly for a relaxed and enjoyable journey. The Driver Monitoring System mounted on the steering column monitors the driver’s attention to the road ahead when using the hands-off feature.

ProPILOT 2.0 takes advantage of the extensive 3D map to center the vehicle in the lane when driving in hands-on mode. Other top driver assistance features include:

  • Nissan Safety Shield 360
  • Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection
  • Blind Spot Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • High Beam Assist
  • Rear Automatic Braking

By 2030, every manufacturer in the entire VW Group will offer some sort of electric vehicle, even Lamborghinis and Bugattis. (If the transmission problem with sustainable acceleration with EV batteries is solved, electric sports cars will really happen.) The company aims to achieve half its sales through all-electric vehicles by 2030 as well.

ID. SPACE VIZZION
Of the vehicles listed in this article, the ID. SPACE VIZZION is still in concept. It's the seventh slotted vehicle for VW's EV platform. As an EV SUV, this sizable wagon offers 300 miles of EPA-rated range from its 82-kWh battery pack, plus 150-kW DC fast charging capability. Plus, you get a typical EV's fast acceleration of 0-60 mph in 5 seconds.
The ID. SPACE VIZZION's preconceived battery pack will be mounted low in the center of the vehicle with either a single rear motor or front and rear motors. Aside from the mileage, this battery and motor placement allow for 275 HP in rear-drive form alone. With dual motors, this SUV could reach 335 HP, according to Car and Driver.
The 22-inch wheels and touch-sensitive areas to activate the doors will likely appear in higher-end models. The augmented-reality heads-up display replaces the gauge cluster as the driver's information source. It's intended for every vehicle class. Plus, the 15.6-inch center screen will likely be in every vehicle class, too.
Aside from the obvious sustainability of a Volkswagen EV, vegan synthetic leather is another plus. Dubbed AppleSkin, this leather uses waste from apple juice production. There's no clear pricing scale or release date yet, but the launch year is still slated as 2022.
